University of Oklahoma - USA

Created by the Oklahoma Territorial Legislature in 1890, the University of Oklahoma is a doctoral degree-granting research university serving the educational, cultural, economic and health care needs of the state, region and nation. The Norman campus serves as home to all of the university’s academic programs except health-related fields. Both the Norman and Health Sciences Center colleges offer programs at the Schusterman Center, the site of OU-Tulsa. The OU Health Sciences Center, which is located in Oklahoma City, is one of only four comprehensive academic health centers in the nation with seven professional colleges. OU enrolls more than 31,000 students, has more than 2,000 full-time faculty members, and has 19 colleges offering 147 majors at the baccalaureate level, 152 majors at the master’s level, 80 majors at the doctoral level, 35 majors at the first professional level, and eight graduate certificates. Deakin University is one of Australia's younger universities (it was established in 1974). Sung Kyun Kwan University (SKK)was established in 1398 to offer prayers and memorials to Confucius and his disciples, and to promote the study of the Confucian. Technische Universität Braunschweig - Germany

The Technical University at Brunswick is the oldest University of Technology in Germany. It was founded in 1745 as Collegium Carolinum. Today it has about 13,000 students, making it the third largest university in Lower Saxony. Its complete name is Technische Universität Carolo-Wilhelmina zu Braunschweig (Technical University Carolo-Wilhelmina at Brunswick).Today, out of a total student community of around 15'000, there are nearly 1'600 non-German students, from well over 80 different countries, studying here for their first academic degree or within bilateral exchange programmes. Kumamoto University is a university located in Kumamoto, Japan. In 1665, when Duke Herzog Christian-Albrecht von Holstein-Gottorf found this university, it was the direct response to his country's need for well-educated young men to be able to serve the state. 140 students enrolled in the faculties of Theology, Law, Medicine and Philosophy initially established.Just as the body of students attending the CAU has increased to over 20,000, so the range of subjects offered has long been extended to include economics, the natural sciences, agriculture, engineering, and science of education. Università degli Studi di Pavia - Italy

The University of Pavia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. An edict issued by King Lotharius quotes a higher education institution in Pavia as already established in 825. This institution, mainly devoted to law studies, was then chosen as the main education centre for northern Italy. Enlarged and renovated by the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, it became the University of the Duchy, officially established as a Studium Generale by Emperor Charles IV in 1361. Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) is only one of a large group of famous professors who taught at the University of Pavia. To mention just a few, let us recall Girolamo Cardano (1501-1576), Antonio Scarpa (1752-1832) and Camillo Golgi (1843-1926). Golgi was given the Nobel prize in 1906, together with the Spanish Santiago Ramon y Cajal. The University of Pavia enjoys a strong tradition of international student and teacher exchanges: bilateral agreements involve, among others, the historical universities of Coimbra, and many universities in Europe, the Middle East, the Mediterranean area, the United States of America, China,Japan and many other countries.

Istanbul Technical University - Turkey

ITU was established in 1773, during the time of the Ottoman Sultan Mustafa III. With its original name "Muhendishane-i Bahr-i Humayun", The Royal School of Naval Engineering, its responsibility was to educate chart masters and ship builders. In 1795, the "Muhendishane-i Berr-i Humayun", The Royal School of Military Engineering, was established to educate the technical staff in the army. In 1847, education in the field of architecture was also introduced.Established in 1883, the School of Civil Engineering assumed the name "Engineering Academy", with the aim of teaching essentials skills needed in planning and implementing the country�s new infrastructure projects. Gaining university status in 1928, the Engineering Academy continued to provide education in the fields of engineering and architecture until it was incorporated into ITU in 1944. Finally, in 1946, ITU became an autonomous university which included the Faculties of Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering.With a history stretching back over 227 years, providing technical education within a modern educational environment and strong academic staff, ITU is strongly identified with architectural and engineering education in Turkey.

Université Paris V - Descartes - France

Established 1971, following the division of the University of Paris (1253), the University of Paris 5 chose to be placed under the patronage of philosopher Rene Descartes in order to commemorate his truly modern scientific work that included all human knowledge and accordingly the university adopted a multidisciplinary curriculum. The university provides bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in medicine, pharmacy, social sciences and humanities. The university currently has 10 units of formation and research centres. With more than 1900 professors and over 1000 administrative staff, the university accommodates each year more than 32000 students across many campuses.

University of Mannheim - Germany

The university was actually founded in 1907 as college for economics. In 1967 the college extended to the university of today. "The University of Mannheim is the Harvard of Germany." This headline from Die Zeit shows that Germany's distinguished weekly newspaper clearly believes that the University of Mannheim is a force to be reckoned with on the academic circuit, even though, according to the Dean of Mannheim University, this statement might be slightly exaggerated: "Obviously, we are very pleased to receive such lavish praise," admits Rector Hans-Wolfgang Arndt, "but Mannheim as the German Harvard - however flattering that may be, I don't think we have achieved the same level of recognition yet that Harvard has, although this is what we are striving for and hope to achieve within the next few years."The faculties for business, economics and social sciences are ranked as top in Germany. The faculty of business is accredited by AACSB and EQUIS.

The University of Siena (Università di Siena, UNISI) in Tuscany is one of the oldest universities of Italy and in the world, founded in 1240AD, initially as a Studium Senese. It currently has around 20,000 enrolled students, out of Siena's population of approximately 50,000, and is most renowned for its Law and Medicine schools. The 19th century witnessed the constant growth of the University of Siena, escalating from four hundred students between the wars to more than 20 thousand in the last few years. During the start of the academic year, on November 7th, 1990 the Sienese academy celebrated its 750th anniversary.

The Sunday Times University Guide

The Sunday Times University of the Year is an annual award given to a British university or other higher education institution by The Sunday Times. Though the guide contains a league table of UK universities compiled from various statistics, the award is not necessarily given to the university at the top (in fact, it only has been once). Instead, a university is chosen by a panel of experts based on all round academic excellence.

Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg - Germany

The Martin Luther University of today developed from two universities: one was founded in Wittenberg in 1502, and the other in Halle in 1694. Both universities went through a very eventful history with many ups and downs. Luther and Melanchthon taught in Wittenberg and made the town and its university the intellectual centre of the Reformation. In around 1700, the lawyer Christian Thomasius and philosopher Christian Wolff made Halle an important centre of the German Enlightenment.Then Napoleon abruptly closed the university in Wittenberg in 1813. As a result of territorial restructuring after the Napoleonic Wars, both universities were united in Halle in 1817. After the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the foundation of Halle University in 1994, the 500th Jubilee of the foundation of the University of Wittenberg lies ahead of us in the year 2002.Owing to its long history, the University developed alongside the City of Halle. The University has continued to develop and spread across the whole of the inner city.Many institutions are housed in old villas or historical buildings; additionally, many new university buildings have been built or completely restored.
